Representing the region: showcasing textiles in Huddersfield

July 21, 2023vonJennifer Ogden

This month we were the headline sponsor at the 92nd Textile Institute World Conference at the University of Huddersfield. Attended by HRH The Princess Royal, the event focussed on ‘Sustainability of the Textile and Fashion Supply Chain – Transitioning to Zero Carbon and Zero Waste’.

The conference addressed the strategies required to manage the impact of the textile and fashion supply chain on the environment, and supported the worldwide initiatives being undertaken in moving toward zero carbon emissions.

Previewed at the event was a film created by Fashion Creative Direction student, Lucy Toole, which showcased the textiles industry within and around Huddersfield.

During the film’s production process, Lucy visited Camira’s manufacturing facilities in Meltham, Huddersfield to interview our CEO, Alan Williams. Lucy and Alan discussed the textiles industry in the local area, as well as the huge contribution that Camira and other textile companies make to the UK and the global economy.

Commenting on the creation of the film, Lucy Toole said: “The video was created to provide an informative introduction to the world of textiles and how local businesses in Huddersfield are developing and innovating to reduce their carbon footprint.

“The film formed part of my Final Major Project for my course, and as challenging as it has been to produce, I have thoroughly enjoyed taking a deeper look into how a textiles business operates. Visiting sites and manufacturing facilities was eye opening and I’d really like to thank everyone that was involved and showed support.”

Camira is keen to support students where possible, and to provide them with opportunities to enrich their knowledge of textiles and gain real life experience of working in the sector.
